The space between sky and
roof could be given a name, and could
be held loosely
could crush out each star and arbor
waiting for empty space to swallow us
I grew tired of dangling,
wished to peel your sweating
hands from my arm
and land my calloused feet
on the ground.
It was cracked and unchanged
our footprints kissed densely into
each heartbeat of the earth.
I left you there, legs swinging high above me
and traced my way back.

I didn’t say goodbye, and you
reached into your chest, crushed
your own lungs so
you couldn’t
breathe my name.
